Biertoifel “Skinhead Party” Sunny Bastard CD Digipack 2022
Vi ricordate quando, una decina (o poco più) di anni fa, il punk-oi europeo era dominato dai gruppi tedeschi? I festival migliori erano in Germania, le etichette tedesche (Randale, Sunny Bastards, Contra, KB) cominciavano a dominare il mercato e Volxsturm, Berliner Weisse, Loikaemie, Stomper 98, Bierpatrioten facevano uscire caterve di dischi, tutti suonati e registrati molto meglio della media e tutti cantati in tedesco con vocione rauco annesso (eppure in qualche modo melodici e anthemici). La cosa sorprendente è che, onestamente, la scena tedesca prima di allora non era mai stata un granchè.
Da allora ne è passata di acqua sotto i ponti: se per quanto riguarda le etichette discografiche la Germania è rimasta il centro nevralgico in Europa, e se a livello di partecipazione la scena tedesca è tra le più floride al mondo, per quanto riguarda i gruppi (anche a causa di un overdose di gruppi tedeschi di medio-bassa qualità) credo che in questo momento Spagna e (soprattutto) Francia abbiano in mano lo scettro e la Germania sia qualche posizione indietro.
Tutto questo per dire che se vi sentite orfani del deutsche punk di quegli anni, se non avete smesso di aspettare un disco nuovo dei Volxsturm, se avete la discografia completa degli Springtoifel (di cui infatti fanno una cover), ecco allora questo disco fa assolutamente per voi e lo amerete.
Cerchi un gruppo che tecnicamente suoni bene, che abbia un bel muro di suono, che mescoli oi e deutsche rock (sono consapevole che sia un accostamento problematico e quindi specifico che sto parlando solo di musica, però ascoltando questo disco non possono non venire in mente i Kategorie C), che canti in tedesco con quel bel vocione roco ma non sforzato, con canzoni lunghe in media oltre 3 minuti (ecco, l’eccessiva lunghezza dei pezzi è una cosa che non ho mai capito, io se si tratta di punk faccio fatica ad andare oltre i due minuti e mezzo)? Ti sentirai a casa!
In caso invece non si apprezzi questo tipo di suono dubito che che possa piacere. Insomma, prendere o lasciare, personalmente è un disco che mi ha divertito ma che non penso entrerà in rotazione tra i miei ascolti. Diciamo un 6 bretelle e mezzo su 10.
Ah, non mi sono messo a tradurre i testi ma, a giudicare dall’unico pezzo in inglese presente, non penso di perdermi molto; loro comunque sembrano dei simpaticoni.
Il pezzo migliore: “Skinhead party” (manifesto perfetto per la band, bel coro e bel giro di basso)
Il pezzo meno riuscito: “Sound of the street” (4’33” infiniti e scritti col generatore automatico di pezzi oi, insopportabile il minuto e mezzo finale rallentato stile canto da osteria)
The Spartanics “Sad days for the kids” LP+CD Smith & Miller 2022
Rimaniamo in Germania, nell’ex DDR e per la precisione a Lipsia, dove gli Spartanics sono arrivati al secondo full length (l’ultima uscita del 2020 era infatti un miniLP più che un disco vero e proprio), ad opera dell’etichetta Smith & Miller nata da poco ma già piuttosto attiva.
Il trio è molto cresciuto rispetto al debutto (che non mi aveva impressionato) e beneficia di una registrazione decisamente migliore. Streetpunk/Oi! a metà strada tra Gimp Fist, On File e Oxymoron (infatti “Sad days for the kids”, il pezzo che dà titolo al disco, vede come ospite alla voce proprio Sucker), melodico, ritmato e non troppo veloce.
Da segnalare due piccole gemme come “Don’t follow us” e “Nothing in my head” e le altrettanto buone “The price is heiß” e “Magic cake”, oltre ad una riuscita cover di “Death or glory” ed un finale con “Right and wrong” che rasenta il power pop.
In generale un buon album con qualche piccolissima caduta di tono, forse un po’ derivativo in certi momenti ma decisamente apprezzabile.

Il pezzo meno riuscito: “Early bird” (io non avrei iniziato il disco con questa, un po’ anonima)

Do you remember when, a decade (or so) ago, European punk-oi was totally dominated by German bands? The best festivals were in Germany, the German labels (Randale, Sunny Bastards, Contra, KB) were starting to dominate the market and bands as Volxsturm, Berliner Weisse, Loikaemie, Stomper 98, Bierpatrioten were releasing tons of records, all played and recorded much better than the average and all sung in German with this kind of hoarse voice (yet somehow melodic and anthemic). The surprising thing is that, honestly, the German scene was never that great before.
Since then, a lot of water passed under the bridge: about record label, Germany has remained the nerve center in Europe, and in terms of participation the German scene is one of the biggest in the world, but (also due to an overdose of medium-low quality German bands) about bands I believe that right now Spain and (above all) France are holding the scepter and Germany is a few positions behind.
This just to say that if you feel like an orphan of the deutsche punk of those years, if you haven’t stopped waiting for a new Volxsturm album, if you have the complete Springtoifel discography (no surprise that there’s a Springtoifel cover in this album), then this album is absolutely for you and you will love it.
Are you looking for a group that technically plays well, that has a good wall of sound, that mixes oi and deutsche rock (I am aware that it is a problematic combination and I have to state that I am only talking about music, however listening to this record they cannot but come to mind the Kategorie C), who sings in German with that nice hoarse but not forced voice, with songs that are on average over 3 minutes long (this length of the pieces is excessive to me and it’s something I’ve never understood, if it’s punk I struggle to go beyond two and a half minutes)? Welcome home!
If, on the other hand, you don’t appreciate this type of sound, I doubt that you will like it. So, take it or leave it, personally it’s a record that I enjoyed but I don’t think it will rotate among my listenings. Let’s say a 6 and a half braces out of 10.
Ah, I haven’t started translating the lyrics but, judging by the only piece in English, I don’t think I’m missing much; however, they seem to be nice guys.
Best song: “Skinhead party” (their perfect manifesto, nice chorus and funny bassline)
Less succesful song: “Sound of the street” (4’33” it’s too much, probably written with a kind of automatic generator of oi songs, I can’t stand the final pub style chorus)
The Spartanics “Sad days for the kids” LP+CD Smith & Miller 2022
We remain in Germany, in the former DDR and more to be precise in Leipzig, where the Spartanics reached their second full length (the last release of 2020 was in fact a miniLP more than a real full record), by Smith & Miller, a label recently born but already quite active.
The trio has grown a lot since their debut (which didn’t impress me) and benefit from a much better recording. Streetpunk/Oi! halfway between Gimp Fist, On File and Oxymoron (in fact “Sad days for the kids”, the piece that gives the album its title, sees Sucker as a guest on vocals), melodic, rhythmic and not too fast.
There are two remarkable small gems such as “Don’t follow us” and “Nothing in my head” and the equally good “The price is heiß” and “Magic cake”, as well as a successful cover of “Death or glory” and a final with a “Right and wrong” bordering on power pop.
In general a good album with some very small drops in tone, perhaps a little derivative in certain moments but definitely appreciable. 7/10
Best song: “Don’t follow us” (a supercatchy refrain)
Less succesful song: “Early bird” (to me it’s a bit anonymous song, I don’t know why it’s the opening song)
