Scontro tra due pesi massimi del glam skinhead rock!

Hard Wax “Don’t stop the beat” Rebellion Records/ LSM Vinyls CD/LP 2022
Gli Hard Wax sono inglesi e con questo “Don’t stop the beat” arrivano al terzo album; mi sono perso il secondo, ma ricordo ancora il primo (“Diamond in the rough”) con un certo piacere, anche se ammetto che non lo avevo divorato.
Con questo “Don’t stop the beat” tornano all’attacco con 8 pezzi killer di bovver rock che guarda solo in parte al glam rock modello “quello che ascoltano ora i ragazzi fichi”, ma che deve molto anche al rock anni ’60 e ad un certo punk rock’n roll potenziato.
Per cui largo a tante influenze diverse ponderate e mescolate con bravura e sagacia, Bones e Stealers (“No mess no fuss”), Stones (“Out of our way”), persino una certa melodia ’77 di scuola Buzzcocks (“Black and blue”).
La durata del disco è perfettamente funzionale al loro essere diretti e senza fronzoli: 8 pezzi e poco più di 20 minuti, così non riesci ad accorgerti nemmeno di cosa ti ha colpito!
Decisamente il loro disco migliore finora, e uno dei dischi dell’anno, non il disco dell’anno solo perchè non suonano mai dal vivo… così imparano!
Il pezzo migliore: “Black and blue” (un riff di chitarra sparato in faccia e una melodia che ti stregano subito)
Il pezzo meno riuscito: davvero, non so cosa scegliere! Diciamo “Shadows of the night”, ma solo perchè dura troppo rispetto agli altri (più di 3 minuti e mezzo)

Gli Suede Razors, sebbene condividano con gli Hard Wax l’etichetta (anzi, le etichette: una è la benemerita olandese Rebellion Records, l’altra, LSM Vinyls, è la nuova incarnazione della Longshot), vengono dagli USA, più precisamente dall’area di San Francisco.
Archiviate tutte le influenze più ’77ine della loro prima fase, questo nuovo MLP punta diretto verso Slade, Giuda, Rose Tattoo e i Cock Sparrer più glam, mentre la voce mi ricorda molto i loro concittadini Reducers SF (grandissimi!).
I suoni sono ok, l’immagine è sempre precisina, insomma tutte le robe sarebbero al punto giusto, ma il risultato non mi soddisfa: mi sembra tutto troppo dosato e preciso, come se fosse tutto un po’ troppo piacione.
La cover oscura ma pur sempre fatta dagli AC/DC, i testi stradaioli che fomentano (“Stand strong”) ma sostanzialmente non dicono nulla di preciso, il pezzo finale che si chiama “Vive le rock” come la rivista punk rock più cool che ci sia in giro, i coretti giusti e non troppo difficili da cantare tutti assieme, il fatto che questo disco sia uscito esattamente nel periodo in cui c’è così tanto interesse verso il glam rock all’interno della scena skinhead… non lo so, c’è qualcosa che mi toglie la poesia.
E’ un 6 perchè, obiettivamente, il disco ha degli ottimi pezzi (in particolare “Vive le rock”) ed è suonato molto bene, però non mi convince; capisco benissimo però perchè in giro se ne parli in maniera così entusiastica.

Hard Wax come from UK and “Don’t stop the beat” is their third album; I missed the second one, but I still remember the first (“Diamond in the rough”) with some pleasure, even if I admit that I hadn’t devoured it.
With this “Don’t stop the beat” they return to the attack with 8 killer pieces of bovver rock only partially inspired to the glam rock “that now cool kids must listen”, but also ispired to 60s rock and powered punk rock’n roll.
So many different influences weighted and mixed with skill and sagacity, you can hear Bones and Stealers (“No mess no fuss”), Stones (“Out of our way”), even a certain ’77 melody à la Buzzcocks (“Black and blue”).
The length of the disc is perfectly functional to their being direct and without frills: 8 tracks and a little more than 20 minutes, so you don’t know what just hit you!
Definitely their best record so far, and one of the records of the year, not THE record of the year just because they never play live…that’s what you get for never play live, ahah!
Best song: “Black and blue” (killer riff and a bewitched melody)
Less successfool song: I really don’t know! Maybe “Shadows of the night” but just because it’s a bit too long

Suede Razors, although they share the same label with Hard Wax (the labelS: one is the well-deserving Dutch Rebellion Records, the other, LSM Vinyls, is the new incarnation of Longshot), come from USA, more specifically from San Francisco area.
Saved all the more ’77 influences of their first phase, this new MLP points directly to Slade, Giuda, Rose Tattoo and Cock Sparrer glam side, while the voice reminds me a lot of their fellow citizens Reducers SF (what a band!).
Sounds are ok, their image is always sharp, in short, all should be at the right point, but the result doesn’t satisfy me: everything seems too dosed and precise, as if it were all a bit too pleasant.
The obscure cover (but still made by AC/DC), the street-loving lyrics that stir up (“Stand strong”) but essentially say nothing, the final song called “Vive le rock” like the coolest punk rock magazine around, the right choirs not too difficult to sing all together, the fact that this record came out exactly at the time when there is so much interest in glam rock within the skinhead scene… I don’t I know, there is something that’s runining this record.
It’s a 6 because, objectively, the record has some excellent pieces (in particular “Vive le rock”) and is played very well, but it doesn’t convince me; but I can really understand why people talk about it so enthusiastically.
Best song: “Vive le rock” is a great song, no doubt
