Senzabenza, The Crooks, Boogie Spiders, CSA Baraonda, Segrate (MI) 21.01.2023

Fine settimana milanese un po’ spento ravvivato dall’arrivo di un gruppone quale i grandissimi Senzabenza, portabandiera del punk rock e detentori del primato di primo (1989!) gruppo punk rock in Italia (intendendo per punk rock strettamente quello Ramones style). Nati, ricordiamo, dalle ceneri di un gruppo seminale quale i London 77, i Senzabenza vengono dalla provincia di Latina, una provincia spesso avara di gruppi punk (pochi ma buoni, direi).

Era un bel po’ che il sottoscritto signor Oi! Influencer non li vedeva dal vivo, per cui accompagnato dalla signora Influencer, sfidiamo il gelo invernale milanese e arriviamo al Baraonda; sull’evento l’orario di partenza è previsto per le 21.30, ma è evidentemente una fregnaccia, anche se fortunatamente per le 22 c’è già un po’ di gente.

Intorno alle 22.15 iniziano i Boogie Spiders di Milano; anche loro non li vedevo da un po’ di tempo. Il trio attacca con il suo punk’ rock’n roll dalle influenze rockabilly e blues, lievemente più punk rock di quanto ricordavo. Dal punto di vista tecnico, nulla da dire (io poi apprezzo sempre tantissimo i batteristi che caricano il colpo partendo dall’alto), dal punto di vista dell’impatto scenico, altrettanto: completi in tinta, balli, saltini, scenette ad uso e consumo del pubblico. E qui io e la signora Influencer ci troviamo in disaccordo: a lei i Boogie Spiders sono decisamente piaciuti, io invece dopo i primi pezzi scopro che, nonostante le mossettine, gli ammiccamentini, gli assolini, mi sto annoiando. O forse è proprio per quello? Forse sì: anche perchè io i Boogie Spiders li avevo già visti, e almeno una volta non mi erano dispiaciuti, e non penso solo per l’alcool ingurgitato. Stavolta li ho trovati troppo costruiti, e la cosa ha ammazzato il mio entusiasmo.

Quando è il turno degli old rockers milanesi Crooks, che anche loro (così facciamo terno!) non vedo dal vivo da diverse ere geologiche, le posizioni del signor e della signora Influencer si scontrano di nuovo. Lei (che non li conosceva, o li conosceva solo di nome) li ha trovati mosci (ad esclusione del pezzo con Lester Greenowski, che ha apprezzato molto- e anch’io) mentre secondo me, esclusa forse un po’ di ruggine nei primi pezzi, hanno fatto un gran concerto.
Tutto diverso rispetto ai Booogie Spiders, ovvero poca concessione all’intrattenimento e parla la musica, punk rock di impronta 77ina più ammerigano che inglese, e qualche accenno garage. Stasera suonano diverse canzoni del nuovo album (“Mediacracy”) che io, lo ammetto subito, non ho ancora sentito, ed in effetti sono un pochino più power pop e più pulite del loro vecchio materiale, c’è forse da prenderci l’orecchio (una di queste è il video che trovate qui sotto). Comunque io il concerto (che finisce con una buona dose di classici come “Desperado” e “1973”) l’ho apprezzato molto: secco, diretto, essenziale, una band che suona da una ventina d’anni dell’onesto sporco rock and roll e che va avanti a dispetto delle mode.

A mezzanotte tocca ai Senzabenza; il Baraonda si è riempito e la gente è presa bene; il momento giusto perchè i quattro punk rockers pontini possano scatenare il loro punk pop di classe. Notare che non uso la parola “punk pop” così a caso: infatti il gruppo sta presentando il loro nuovo disco che si chiama (pensate un po’) “Punk pop dilemma” (che conto di recensire a breve su questi spazi!).

Dopo una classica “You’re a riot girl” di apertura e una “Gigius” che riscalda gli animi, spazio alle tracce del nuovo disco, che non sembrano niente male; il resto della scaletta pesca un po’ da tutta la discografia della band, che comincia ad essere piuttosto corposa. La band non sbaglia una nota ed il concerto è davvero divertente e coinvolgente, e qui (addirittura) tra me e la signora Influencer torna l’armonia, ed entrambi siamo d’accordo che è un concerto da paura! Un’oretta di concerto, qualche cover, i Crooks invitati sul palco e poi tanti saluti, sperando di ribeccarci a breve. Enormi Senzabenza!

A bit dull weekend in Milan revived by the arrival of a big band such as the great Senzabenza, standard-bearers of punk rock and holders of the record of first (1989!) punk rock band in Italy I mean punk rock Ramones style). Born from the ashes of a seminal group such as London 77, Senzabenza come from the province of Latina (near Rome), a province often stingy with punk bands (few but good, I would say).
It has been a while since yours truly Mr. Oi! Influencer didn’t see them live, so with by Mrs. Influencer, we challenge the Milanese winter frost and arrive at Baraonda; on the event the departure time is scheduled for 21.30, but it’s obviously bullshit, even if luckily there are already a few people.

Around 22.15 Boogie Spiders start; I hadn’t seen them for a while either. The trio from Milan starts with its rockabilly and blues-influenced punk’ rock’n roll, slightly more punk rock than I remembered. From a technical point of view, nothing to say (then I always really appreciate the drummers who load the shot starting from the top), from the point of view of the scenic impact, equally: matching suits, dances, jumps, skits for the amusement of the public. And here Mrs. Influencer and I find ourselves in disagreement: she definitely liked the Boogie Spiders, while after the first few songs I discover that, despite the little moves, the winks, the solos, I’m getting bored. Or maybe that’s because of all this stuff? Maybe yes: also because I had already seen the Boogie Spiders, and at least once I didn’t mind them, and I don’t think it was just because of the alcohol. This time I found them too built, and it killed my enthusiasm.

And when it’s the turn of the Milanese old rockers Crooks, whom I haven’t seen live since several geological eras too, the opinions of Mr. and Mrs. Influencer collide again. She (who didn’t know them, just by name) found them limp (apart from the song with Lester Greenowski, which she appreciated very much – and so did I) while in my opinion, excluding perhaps a little rust in the first pieces, they had a great gig.
All different from the Booogie Spiders, that is, little concession to entertainment and the music speaks, punk rock with a 77 imprint more American than English, and some hints of garage. Tonight they’re playing several songs from the new album (“Mediacracy”) that I haven’t heard yet, and in fact they’re a little bit more power pop and cleaner than their old stuff (one of these is the video you find above). However I really enjoyed the concert (which ends with a good dose of classics like “Desperado” and “1973”): dry, direct, essential, a band that has been playing honest dirty rock and roll and that goes on in spite of fashions.

At midnight it’s up to the Senzabenza; the Baraonda has filled up and the people are enjoing the show; the right time for the four punk rockers to unleash their classy punk pop. Note that I don’t use the word “punk pop” so casually: in fact the group is presenting their new album called (think about it) “Punk pop dilemma” (which I plan to review shortly!).
After the opening with the classic “You’re a riot girl” and with “Gigius” that warms the spirits, space for the tracks of the new album, which don’t seem bad; the rest of the gig draws a bit from the entire discography of the band, which is starting to be quite full-bodied. The band doesn’t miss a note and the concert is really fun and engaging, and here (even) harmony returns between me and Mrs. Influencer, and we both agree that it’s a terrific concert! An hour of concert, some covers, the Crooks invited on stage and then many greetings, hoping to meet again soon. Senzabenza are fuckin’ great!
