High Vis “Blending” Dais Records, LP/CD 2022

E hanno completamente ragione, perchè onestamente hanno fatto due dischi della madonna, con questo “Blending” che è meno irruento e più ragionato del loro debutto (“No sense no feelings” che è addirittura del 2019, tre anni prima!), ma assolutamente emozionante. Riguardando cosa avevo scritto in due righe quando li avevo messi nella classifica dei migliori album del 2022, leggo un “Stone Roses + Red Alert + Echo & The Bunnymen= TNT” ed in effetti non ci ero andato troppo lontano, anche se forse ci aggiungerei anche i Replacements, o, come già detto, i Fugazi. Anche se sbaglierei, in parte perchè gli High Vis sono molto inglesi, lo si capisce subito (i Red Alert non li ho citati a caso: si sente negli High Vis una certa verve chitarristica che ricorda quello streetpunk melodico, un po’ cupo, passato a volte un po’ in secondo piano) in parte perchè anche se sicuramente hanno masticato un sacco di musica in passato, sti ragazzi qua sfornano un disco moderno e attuale, non una scopiazzatura di gruppi di 40 anni fa.

Ma con un disco del genere non me la sento di star qui ad elencare nomi, gruppi, ondate, generi, roba vecchia VS roba nuova; questo è un disco che emoziona, che cattura, che ti avvolge che trasmette sensazioni anche solo se lo lasci in sottofondo. Magari non è un disco che ascolti tutti i giorni, ma ogni volta che lo tiri fuori è difficile ascoltarlo una volta sola, più probabile farlo girare almeno un paio di volte.

Il pezzo migliore: “Talk for hours” sì è un singolone un po’ leccaculo, ma avercene…

Il pezzo meno riuscito: difficilissimo, perchè non c’è un pezzo brutto, si portano tutti a casa la sufficienza, diciamo che “Morality test” è quello che rimane un po’ meno in testa

Italia 90 “Living human treasure” Brace Yourself Records, LP/CD Digipack 2023

Eh, beh, DIREI. Eppure, per fortuna, ci ha detto bene. “Living human treasure” è il primo disco degli Italia 90, che arriva dopo un certo numero di cassettine e singoli. 11 tracce completamente inedite, che spaziano da classici momenti postpunk, a qualche pezzo più Stone Roses, da ammiccamenti agli Sleaford Mods (“Golgotha” o “The MUMSNET mambo”) fino a echi Fountaines DC/Idles.

Il pezzo iniziale, “Cut”, è forse quello più ostico, un pezzo post-punk puro, meccanico e pesantone di scuola Sheffield, la lunghissima (7 minuti e 44 secondi!!!) “Competition” è puro Joy Division/Gang of Four, mentre “New factory” ha un tiro notevole e un basso martellante, molto alla Idles. Notevole anche “Funny bones” (è qui che saltano fuori gli Stone Roses).

Un disco molto complesso, davvero tanti stili diversi mescolati assieme con una maturità che non ci si aspetterebbe da un gruppo così giovane, con un mix molto bilanciato tra accessibilità e sperimentazione.

Anche per loro 7,5 nella hate scala, Londra- Liverpool finisce 1 a 1 e non come London- Hull 0 a 4 (non so se avete colto la citazione, scusatemi ma si è fatta una certa)… ora la curiosità di vederli dal vivo tra qualche giorno sale.

Ah, ultima cosa, sulla grafica, io ho il CD, molto carino, cardsleeve e tutto il resto, non so se è la stessa cosa nell’LP ma magari ci potevano stare pure i testi, visto che sembrano piuttosto interessanti.

Il pezzo migliore: a sorpresa “Tales from beyond” stacca il resto dell’album grazie ad un ritornello devastante

Il pezzo meno riuscito: “The MUMSNET mambo” qui cercano di essere molto particolari, finendo per strafare.

High Vis are 5 big boys from Liverpool with an hardcore background, some references to Fugazi and a blasting drum who, as far as I know (I had no idea), are now very popular in the hardcore scene too. But they play something totally different from HC, and in my opinion they don’t think about it anymore.

And they are completely right, because honestly they have made two great records, this “Blending” is less impetuous and more reasoned than their debut (“No sense no feelings” which is from 2019, three years earlier!), but absolutely thrilling. Looking back at what I had writtenwhen I put them on the best albums of 2022 chart, I read “Stone Roses + Red Alert + Echo & The Bunnymen= TNT” and in fact I hadn’t gone too far, although perhaps I would add also the Replacements, or, the aforementioned Fugazi. Even if I’d be wrong, in part because High Vis are very English, you understand it right away (I haven’t mentioned Red Alert by error: in High Vis you can hear a certain guitar verve that recalls that melodic english streetpunk, from the 80s, that was a little underrated) partly because even if they have certainly chewed a lot of music in the past, these guys here churn out a modern and current record, not a copy of bands from 40 years ago.

But with a record like this I don’t feel like standing here listing names, groups, waves, genres, old stuff VS new stuff; this is a record that excites, that captures, that envelops you and that transmits sensations even if you leave it in the background. Maybe it’s not a record you listen to every day, but every time you take it out it’s hard to listen to it once, more likely to spin it at least a couple of times.

Damn what a heartbreaking review…

Best song: “Talk for hours”: yes, it’s an arse licker hit, but it’s irresistible

Less succesful song: that’s very hard, because there are no bad songs, maybe “Morality test” it is the one that is remembered a little less

Italia 90 is a band that did 90% of the work just choosing the name, and a further 5% with the look (a skinhead singer in a post-punk band? There’s a first time for everything). At this point, is the music also needed?

Eh, well, FUCKING YES. Yet, fortunately, all went well. “Living human treasure” is the first album by Italia 90, which comes after a certain number of tapes and singles. 11 completely unreleased tracks, ranging from classic postpunk moments, to some more Stone Roses songs, from Sleaford Mods‘ winks (“Golgotha” or “The MUMSNET mambo” for example) to Fountaines DC / Idles echoes.

The initial piece, “Cut”, is perhaps the most difficult one, a pure, mechanical and heavy post-punk song that reminds me the Sheffield school, then the very long (7 minutes and 44 seconds!!!) “Competition” is pure Joy Division/Gang of Four sound, while “New factory” has a striking kick and a thumping bass, very Idles-like. Also notable is “Funny bones” (this is where the Stone Roses come in).

A very complex album, so many different styles mixed together with a maturity that one would not expect from such a young group, with a very balanced mix between accessibility and experimentation.

Also for them 7.5 on the hate scale, London-Liverpool ends up 1 to 1 and not like London- Hull 0 to 4 (I don’t know if you’ve read the quote, excuse me but It’s late)… now the curiosity of seeing them live (it will happen in a few days) grows.

Ah, last thing, on the graphics, I have the CD, very nice, cardsleeve and all the rest, I don’t know if it’s the same thing on the LP but maybe the lyrics could have been there too, since they seem quite interesting.

Best song: by surprise “Tales from beyond” surpasses the rest of the album thanks to a devastating chorus

Less succesful song: “The MUMSNET mambo” here they try to be too particular, ending up overdoing it.
