D.I.. (USA) + Sangue Amaro, 08.07.2023 Barrio’s Milano

ENGLISH VERSION WRITTEN IN RED

Serata uscita fuori un po’ all’ultimo momento, che rompe la noia di un afoso sabato sera milanese; seconda data italiana per i D.I. (che suonavano la sera prima al Freakout di Bologna), gruppo che, anche se non è nella mia top ten di tutti i tempi, ha una storia decisamente importante e ha sfornato almeno un paio di ottimi dischi (in particolare “Horse bites dog cries”, una vera bomba). Il cantante Casey Royer inoltre è stato batterista di gruppi quali Social Distortion e Adolescents prima di fondare i D.I., di cui è l’unico membro fisso. Purtroppo la band non ha mai avuto il riscontro che meritava anche per il vissuto a volte turbolento del suo fondatore, ma a un tour dei D.I. nel 2023 direi che non si può mancare!

That’s a gig that came up at the last minute; that was the second Italian date for D.I. (who had played Bologna’s Freakout the night before), a band that, although not in my all-time top ten, has a decidedly important history and has released at least a couple of excellent records (in particular ‘Horse bites dog cries’, a real masterpiece). Vocalist Casey Royer was the drummer in bands like Social Distortion and Adolescents before forming D.I., of which he is the only permanent member. Unfortunately, the band never got the response it deserved, partly due to the sometimes turbulent life of its founder, but a D.I. tour in 2023 is something you can’t miss!

Arriviamo al Barrio’s che i Sangue Amaro hanno appena iniziato a suonare. Al Barrio’s c’è una bella atmosfera, c’è un po’ di gente ma il pubblico purtroppo non è quello delle grandi occasioni. Forse il concerto non è stato abbastanza pubblicizzato, forse l’ingresso (15 euro) era un po’ caro, o forse semplicemente i concerti estivi a Milano soffrono di un calo di presenze dovuto alla fuga generale da Milano che ogni anno accade intorno a fine giugno… chissà.

Ad ogni modo, concentriamoci sui novaresi Sangue Amaro, che vedo per la prima volta dal vivo. Non so benissimo cosa dire di loro, visto che fanno un genere che io onestamente non seguo e che non apprezzo granchè… manco so definirlo perfettamente il genere che fanno, qui l’ignoranza regna sovrana! Boh alla fine è hardcore tiratissimo ibridato ,almeno credo, col metal (quello tutto veloce e incattivito con le vocione growl) e cantato in italiano, loro sono molto tecnici, sanno tenere il palco (d’altro canto sono quasi 7 anni che suonano), forse sono un po’ troppo seriosi sul palco (o forse è il genere che richiede un certo atteggiamento?), anche se io gli accostamenti hc/metal non li reggo. Insomma, io credo che a molti possano anche piacere, io mi fermo qui perché non so proprio più cosa dire, occhi e orecchie ce li avete anche voi, guardatevi il video qua sotto e decidete!

We arrive at Barrio’s, where Sangue Amaro have just started to play. The atmosphere in Barrio’s is good, there are a few people, but unfortunately the audience is not that of the big events. Maybe the gig was not well advertised, maybe the entrance was a bit expensive (15 euros), or maybe the summer concerts in Milan simply suffer from a drop in attendance due to the general flight from Milan that happens every year at the end of June… who knows.

In any case, let’s focus on Sangue Amaro from Novara (north of Italy), whom I’m seeing live for the first time. I don’t really know what to say about them, because they play a genre that I honestly don’t follow and don’t like very much… I don’t even know how to define the genre they play perfectly, ignorance reigns supreme here! Well, in the end it’s very fast hardcore, at least I think so, hybridised with metal (the one that’s all fast and hardened with big growling vocals) and sung in Italian, they’re very technical, they know how to hold the stage (they’ve been playing for almost 7 years), they seem nice, even if they’re maybe a bit too serious on stage (or maybe it’s the genre that requires a certain attitude?), even if I can’t stand the combinations of hc/metal. In short, I think many might even like them, I’ll stop here because I really don’t know what to say, you have eyes and ears too, watch the video below and decide!

Finito il concerto dei Sangue Amaro si esce tutti fuori dal Barrio’s per respirare un po’ (dentro il caldo è davvero difficilmente sopportabile) e fare un po’ di chiacchiere e gossip, cambio palco piuttosto breve comunque e i californiani saltano sul palco pronti a spaccare tutto. E, attenzione allo spoiler, ci riescono!

Once the Sangue Amaro concert is over, we all go outside Barrio’s to breathe a bit (inside, the heat is really hard to bear) and do a bit of chatting and gossiping, rather brief stage change anyway, and the Californians jump on stage ready to smash it all. And, spoiler alert, they succeed!

Come dicevo prima, il buon Casey Royer è l’unico della membro originale della band, ma, se non vado errato, chitarrista, bassista e batterista sono nella band da una ventina d’anni, infatti si vede che c’è una certa chimica nella band, che sembra davvero affiatata.
A inizio concerto però devo portare in macchina un disco che ho comprato (Anfibio Records stava già smontando il banchetto), quindi mi avvio velocemente, tragicamente da fuori sento che mi sto perdendo uno dei miei pezzi preferiti, ovvero “Johnny’s got a problem”, non mi aspettavo che la suonassero subito, dannazione!

Rientro comunque (quasi) subito e mi piazzo vicino al palco, la gente è piuttosto timida, ci sono giusto 3-4 ragazzini che si scatenano sotto al palco, il resto del pubblico è preso bene ma, sarà il caldo, sarà la timidezza, sarà perché ti amo, si tiene un po’ lontano dal palco. Peccato, perché gli americani fanno un gran concerto, con tanti pezzi vecchi presi da “Horse bites dog cries” (“Imminent war”, “Obnoxious” tra gli altri), una ottima cover di “Amoeba” (pezzo scritto anche da Casey stesso) e un assalto sonoro davvero notevole, sembra una band di giovincelli!

As I said, the good ol’ Casey Royer is the only original member of the band, but if I’m not mistaken, the guitarist, bassist and drummer have been in the band for about twenty years, so you can see that there’s a certain chemistry in the band, which seems really tight.
At the beginning of the concert, however, I had to take a record I had bought to the car (Anfibio Records were already dismantling the stand), so I left quickly, tragically hearing from outside that I was missing one of my favourite songs, ‘Johnny’s got a problem’, I didn’t expect them to play it right away, damn!
I come back in (almost) immediately and sit down near the stage, the people are quite shy, there are only 3-4 kids going wild under the stage, the rest of the audience is well taken care of, but, it may be the heat, it may be the shyness, anyway they keep a bit away from the stage. It’s a pity, because the Americans give a great concert, with a lot of old songs from ‘Horse bites dog cries’ (‘Imminent war’, ‘Obnoxious’ among others), an excellent cover of ‘Amoeba’ (a song whixh was co-written by Casey himself) and a really remarkable sonic assault, they seem like a band of teenagers!

I D.I. suonano non solo con energia, ma anche bene, e suonano tanto! Più di un’ora di concerto, ottima chiusura con “Richard hung himself”, “Stick to your guns” e “Youth in Asia” e addirittura bis richiesto a gran voce (il pubblico verso la fine riesce a lasciarsi andare un po’ di più) con due canzoni che però onestamente non ricordo!

Devo dire che non mi aspettavo di trovare i D.I. così in forma, anche considerato che erano nel bel mezzo di un tour europeo che avrebbe sfiancato chiunque! Il mio consiglio, nel caso passassero in zona da voi (o anche non troppo vicini) è di correre a vederli perché non sono tante in giro le band storiche così energiche! Consigliatissimi dal vostro influencer di fiducia!

D.I. not only play with energy, they play well, and they play a lot! More than an hour of concert, excellent closing with “Richard hung himself”, “Stick to your guns” and “Youth in Asia” and even an encore that was loudly requested (the audience managed to let go a bit more towards the end) with two songs that I honestly don’t remember!

I must say that I did not expect to find D.I. in such good shape, even considering that they were in the middle of a European tour that would have exhausted anyone! My advice, if they are passing through your area (or even not too far away) is to run and see them, because there aren’t many historic bands around with this kind of energy! Highly recommended by your neighborhood influencer!
