Rimozione, Marciellos, Tremende, Erezione Continua, Fratelli SkaRibelli, Parma, 14.10.2023

Trasfertina a Parma per la prima edizione dell’Italian Ska Raduno, festival nato dall’omonimo gruppo Facebook dedicato allo ska tricolore. La location rimane misteriosa fino all’ultimo, ma quando arriviamo non sembra niente male, con una sala dedicata a concerti e banchetti vari, mentre nella sala bar c’è (oltre ovviamente al bar, cosa che non si può sottolineare abbastanza) un DJ set continuo che andrà avanti sia durante i concerti sia a notte fonda fino alla chiusura.
Purtroppo quando arriviamo scopriamo che gli Arpioni non ci saranno a causa di problemi di salute, peccato perché è sempre un piacere rivedere dal vivo la band bergamasca…

A little trip to Parma for the first edition of Italian Ska Raduno, a festival born from the Facebook group of the same name dedicated to tricolour ska. The location remains a mystery until the last minute, but when we arrive it looks pretty good, with a hall dedicated to concerts and various stalls, while in the bar room (besides the bar, of course, which cannot be emphasised enough) there is a continuous DJ set that goes on both during the concerts and late into the night until closing time.
Unfortunately, when we arrive we find out that Arpioni will not be there due to health problems, which is a shame because it is always a pleasure to see the band from Bergamo live…

Pronti e via e iniziano i Fratelli Skaribelli, mi perdo l’inizio del loro set perché con il DJ set sempre attivo e la porta della sala concerti chiusa a volte non è chiaro se il gruppo ha iniziato. Nonostante il nome della band che non mi piace proprio e che non faceva presagire nulla di buono, i Fratelli Skaribelli fanno un buon concerto; la band parmigiana ci offre uno ska third wave veloce (ma senza esagerare) e divertente, che ricorda un po’ i primi Matrioska o i tedeschi Skaos. Un paio di cover, una dei Toasters e una (davvero inaspettata) “King Kong” dei No Sports (applausi!), un’ottima sezione fiati e una buona tenuta del palco, insomma davvero una sorpresa positiva. E’ ancora presto, per cui il pubblico è ancora un po’ freddino e qualcuno deve ancora arrivare, però loro sono simpatici e coinvolgono comunque i presenti.
Magari ogni tanto sono ancora un po’ acerbi (la nascita del gruppo è piuttosto recente, a quanto ne so), però sono curioso di rivederli ancora, magari coi pantaloni lunghi (odio le band che suonano coi pantaloni corti, a meno che non facciano hardcore o skatecore)!

I missed the beginning of their set because with the DJ set always on and the door to the concert hall closed, it was sometimes unclear whether the band had started. Despite the name of the band, which I don’t really like and which didn’t bode well, Fratelli Skaribelli gave a good concert; the band from Parma offered us a fast (but without exaggeration) and fun third wave ska, somewhat reminiscent of early Matrioska or German Skaos. A couple of covers, one of Toasters and a (really unexpected) “King Kong” by No Sports (applause!), an excellent horn section and good stage holding, in short, a really positive surprise. It’s still early, so the crowd is still a bit cold and some people haven’t arrived yet, but they’re nice and still getting the crowd involved.
Maybe they are still a bit immature at times (the band is quite new as far as I know), but I’m looking forward to seeing them again, maybe in long pants (I hate bands that play in short pants, unless they play hardcore or skatecore)!

I secondi a salire sul palco sono gli Erezione Continua, che finalmente riesco a vedere dal vivo dopo essermeli persi un paio di volte. Avevo ascoltato qualche canzone loro prima del concerto, e onestamente credevo fossero un po’ fuori posto in un festival ska, essendo un gruppo più che altro punk rock, ma per l’occasione aggiungono il trombonista dei Fratelli Skaribelli alla loro formazione e (credo anche proprio riarrangiando alcune loro canzoni) fanno un set di ska misto punk che mi ricorda molto gruppi come Operation Ivy o Hi-Standard o, in alcuni momenti, certe cose dei Clash. Sebbene magari tutto questo non incontra i miei gusti al 100%, gli va riconosciuta una bella dose di coraggio e di voglia di sperimentare; oltre a questo sono molto scenici e il pubblico è dalla loro parte (sicuramente alcune delle giovani facce presenti sono qui per loro). Insomma, alla fine pollice alto da parte mia.

Next up were Erezione Continua, who I finally got to see live after missing them a couple of times. I had heard a few of their songs before the gig and honestly thought they were a bit out of place at a ska festival, being more of a punk rock band, but for the occasion they added the trombonist from the Fratelli Skaribelli to their line-up and (I think they even rearranged some of their own songs) played a ska-mixed-punk set that reminded me a lot of bands like Operation Ivy or Hi-Standard or, sometimes, certain things from The Clash. Even if this is not 100% to my taste, you have to give them credit for a lot of courage and willingness to experiment; besides, they are very scenic and the audience is on their side (surely some of the young faces present are there for them). In the end, thumbs up from me.

Il terzo gruppo è quello che (oltre agli Arpioni) aspettavo di più tra tutti i presenti. Si tratta delle Tremende (o 3Mende che dir si voglia) da Bologna, band attiva da tantissimi anni e che ho sempre apprezzato, sia su disco che dal vivo. Purtroppo le loro esibizioni recenti sono davvero pochissime, direi dosate col contagocce. Il che è davvero un peccato, perché le Tremende fanno un ottimo concerto anche stasera, veramente di alto livello. Ska original con qualche accenno di 2 Tone, davvero ottimamente eseguito e scatenato, davvero difficile rimanere fermi.
Un’oretta di concerto con classici come “La bumba magica”, “Messaggio per te”, “Che combinazione”, un paio di cover (quella di Harry Belafonte nel video sottostante e la classica “Sally Brown”) e finale con come bis la vecchissima “Un’emozione”, tratta addirittura dal primo demo e richiesta a gran voce dal pubblico. Peccato non facciano “Vorrei”, canzone che è tra le mie preferite di sempre. Grandissime Tremende, speriamo di rivederle presto!

The third band is the one I was most looking forward to (apart from Harpions). They are Tremende (or 3Mende as they called themselves) from Bologna, a band that has been active for many years and that I have always appreciated, both on record and live. Unfortunately, their recent performances have been very few and far between, I would say sparse. Which is a shame, because tonight Tremende give a very good concert, really on a high level. Original ska with a touch of 2 Tone, really well played and wild, really hard to keep still.
An hour long concert with classics like “La bumba magica”, “Messaggio per te”, “Che combinazione”, a couple of covers (the one by Harry Belafonte in the video below and the classic “Sally Brown”) and the finale with the very old “Un’emozione” as an encore, taken even from the first demo and requested by the audience. Too bad they didn’t play “Vorrei”, a song that is one of my all-time favourites. Great Tremende, let’s hope to see them again soon!

I The Marciellos da Genova sono invece una cover band degli Skatalites (ma non solo), e non li avevo mai visti dal vivo, sebbene li conoscessi di nome. Tecnicamente eccezionali, con un cantante dotato di una voce davvero superba e anche un discreto ballerino e intrattenitore, sono molto più di una semplice tribute band, presentando un set che presenta anche qualche classico di Ken Boothe e Lord Tanamo (tra gli altri). Sound molto molto giamaicano con un tocco “zeneize”, dimostrano in più occasioni di essere dei cultori della materia e di essere davvero preparati, andando a pescare canzoni conosciute e meno e presentando una scaletta molto convincente e varia.
Purtroppo non seguo tutto il concerto (perché? cazzi miei ahahah) e mi perdo molto della seconda parte, però altra band azzeccata nel contesto e molto interessante. Avevano anche il loro cd, purtroppo avevano sbaraccato il banchetto prima che mi decidessi ad acquistarlo, mannaggia.

The Marciellos from Genoa are a Skatalites cover band (but not just that) and I had never seen them live, although I knew them by name. Technically exceptional, with a singer with a really great voice and also a good dancer and entertainer, they are much more than just a tribute band, presenting a set that also includes some classics by Ken Boothe and Lord Tanamo (among others). With a very, very Jamaican sound with a ‘Genoa’ touch, they prove time and again that they know their stuff and that they are really well prepared, pulling out both well-known and lesser-known songs and presenting a very convincing and varied set list.
Unfortunately I didn’t watch the whole concert (why? it’s not your business ahahaha) and missed a lot of the second part, but another band that was in the right context and very interesting. They also had their CD, unfortunately they cleared the stand before I decided to buy it, damn.

A chiudere la serata ci pensano i Rimozione (ex Rimozione Koatta), band attiva dal 1994 proveniente da Torino e dintorni. Il loro è uno ska third wave cantato in italiano che a volte diventa skacore, che ricorda molto i quasi conterranei Persiana Jones.
Si vede che è una band che ha calcato tanti palcoscenici e che è abituata a stare sul palco, anzi, a viverci, quasi, e anche dal punto di vista di come han suonato assolutamente niente da dire, però devo dire la verità che sono il gruppo che ho apprezzato meno del festival. Forse il loro set è stato un po’ troppo lungo, o forse sarà perché non sono mai stato troppo un loro fan o anche perché il loro genere non è tra i miei preferiti, ma ad un certo punto sono andato a farmi un giro al DJ set (dove comunque stazionava sempre un certo numero di aficionados impegnati costantemente a ballare). Apprezzabile comunque il tentativo di unire un’attitudine più fun con tematiche più serie e l’energia che hanno infuso nella loro esibizione.

The final band of the evening was Rimozione (formerly Rimozione Koatta), a band from Turin (and the surrounding area) who have been around since 1994. Theirs is a third-wave ska sung in Italian that at times becomes skacore, very reminiscent of almost fellow countrymen Persiana Jones.
You can see that this is a band that has played on many stages and is used to being on stage, or rather living on it, almost, and from the point of view of how they played, there is absolutely nothing to say, but I have to say that they were the band that I liked the least at the festival. Maybe it’s because their set was a little too long, or maybe it’s because I’ve never been a big fan of theirs, or maybe it’s because their genre isn’t one of my favourites, but at some point I went to the DJ set (where there were always a few aficionados dancing). What I appreciated was their attempt to combine a fun attitude with more serious themes and the energy they brought to their performance.

Si continua a ballare e bere anche dopo la fine del concerto, con un DJ set che verso la fine si spinge anche in territori meno “original” e più puramente danzerecci, cosa che ho apprezzato molto per due motivi, ovvero: 1) in un DJ set così lungo troppe gemme viniliche “oscure” tendono (parlo per me eh) a stancare dopo un po’ (soprattutto dopo che l’alcool prende il sopravvento e si tende ad essere meno “ricercati”) 2) diversi dei presenti mi sembravano un po’ più “sui generis” che appassionati di ska original, e la selezione rischiava di allontanarli un po’.
Per il resto il raduno è uscito direi piuttosto bene, il posto si è dimostrato adatto, il numero di presenze non era da folle oceaniche ma comunque in numero adeguato, con anche qualche faccia nuova e diverse facce giovani, il che è un’ottima cosa, no? Le band si sono dimostrate gradevoli ed in generale il clima per tutta la serata era di festa come dovrebbe essere. Forse DJ set e concerti insieme a volte erano un po’ troppo (in certi momenti avere più presenze sotto il palco sarebbe stato meglio piuttosto che dividere il pubblico), ma il clima è stato clemente e per fare una pausa dalla musica e fare due chiacchiere si poteva comunque uscire all’aperto.

We continue to dance and drink even after the concert, with a DJ set that towards the end also pushes into less ‘original’ and more purely dancey territories, which I really appreciated for two reasons, namely 1) in such a long DJ set, too many ‘obscure’ vinyl gems tend (speaking for myself, eh) to get tiring after a while (especially when the alcohol takes over and you tend to be less ‘researched’) 2) several of those present seemed to me to be a bit more ‘sui generis’ than original ska fans, and the selection risked alienating them a bit.
Apart from that, I would say that the event turned out quite well, the location proved to be suitable, the number of attendees was not oceanic, but still adequate in number, with even some new faces and some young faces, which is a good thing, right? The bands proved to be enjoyable and generally the atmosphere throughout the evening was festive, as it should be. Maybe the DJ sets and the concerts together were a bit much at times (at certain times it would have been better to have more people under the stage rather than splitting the audience up), but the weather was fine and you could still go outside to take a break from the music and have a chat.
