Chisel/ Mess “Split” Mendeku Diskak 7″ EP 2022
Le due band oi/ streetpunk più chiacchierate del momento condividono uno split e lo skinstagram impazzisce! Due pezzi per 10 minuti precisi in totale
I Chisel vengono da Liverpool, schierano alcuni membri della punk rock band Chubby & the Gang e si sono fatti notare per il notevolissimo LP “Retaliation” uscito a dicembre 2021. Uniscono hardcore, streetpunk e oi classico anni ’80, con una certa melodia e un discreto gusto per i ritornelli da cantare tutti in coro appassionatamente.
I due pezzi sono molto belli, il secondo, “You ain’t seeing nothing yet”, prende il titolo dagli Infa Riot ma musicalmente è un vero e proprio rip off dei Blitz, eppure funziona. I Chisel mi hanno decisamente conquistato.
I Mess invece vengono da Guadalajara, Messico, si sono recentemente fatti un tour europeo (che, ovviamente, non ha toccato l’Italia) e hanno fatto uscire tre singoli ma nessun album. Ricordo di aver sentito qualcuno che li ha definiti “i Casualties senza cresta” e la definizione mi ha fatto molto ridere, ma è anche vera! I due pezzi dello split sono in inglese, secondo me loro funzionano meglio quando cantano in spagnolo, il risultato è che i pezzi non sono male ma non riescono assolutamente a fissarsi nella mia testa, ogni volta che li ascolto dopo poco me li sono già dimenticati.
Interno del disco molto basico, foglietto in bianco e nero con i testi stile anni ’80, io ho due copertine diverse invece, non so se è un errore, un omaggio o se è proprio così il disco.
Comunque diciamo 8 ai Chisel, 7 (meno) ai Mess, quindi 7,5 di media!
Iena/ Scalpo “Split” Hellnation Records- Timebomb Records 7″ EP 2022
Il Belpaese invece risponde con uno split molto anni ’80 italiani con due tra le nuove band più interessanti in Italia.
Partono gli Iena, che vengono da Firenze e sono nuovi fino ad un certo punto, perchè in realtà sono in giro da circa cinque anni. Il loro è un oi influenzato da un certo hardcore anni ’80 non scontato (tipo Stigmathe o Bed Boys), con una batteria marziale e dai cori potenti.
Interessante la cover dei Litfiba scelta, un pezzo decisamente poco conosciuto dal loro primo singolo, io adoro i primi Litfiba ma ho delle riserve sulla scelta del pezzo in quanto forse troppo oscuro, sarei stato curioso di vederli alla prova con qualcos’altro. La cover comunque è senza dubbio riuscita, con un bel giro di basso.
Gli Scalpo invece arrivano da Sondrio, hanno all’attivo un 7″ uscito due anni fa ma hanno cominciato a suonare dal vivo solo alcuni mesi fa. Più che anni ’80 io direi che sono vintage, dalla registrazione volutamente lo-fi alla cover dei Rough, per parlare di qualcosa di più recente a me ricordano un po’ i Tetro Pugnale. Però il loro pezzo nuovo, “Uomo di ferro”, non mi colpisce molto, meglio i loro pezzi precedenti.
Insomma, ripeto, sono due band interessanti perchè è intrigante ascoltare la visione dell’oi “costruito in Italia” di due band che, si sente, partono dall’area hardcore (d’altro canto in Italia i primi gruppi oi e hardcore hanno avuto molte più cose in comune che in altri paesi); in alcuni momenti però l’effetto nostalgia è un po’ troppo marcato e servirebbe qualcosa in più per spiccare davvero (e un solo pezzo originale per band forse è un po’ poco…)
Una menzione particolare alla grafica, davvero ben riuscita.

The two most chatted oi/streetpunk bands share a split and skinstagram goes crazy! Two songs for exactly 10 minutes in total.
The Chisel come from Liverpool, in thei line up there are some members of the punk rock band Chubby & the Gang and made themselves known with the very remarkable LP “Retaliation” released in December 2021. They mix hardcore, streetpunk and the classic 80s oi, with a certain melody and a discreet taste for refrains and passionate choruses.
The two songs are very beautiful, the second one, “You ain’t seeing nothing yet”, robs its title from Infa Riot but musically it is a real rip off from the Blitz, yet it works. The Chisels have definitely won me over.
The Mess instead come from Guadalajara, Mexico, they recently went on a European tour (which obviously didn’t include Italy) and they released three singles but no albums. I remember hearing someone call them “the crestless Casualties” and the definition made me laugh, but it’s also somehow true! The two pieces of the split are sing in English, and that’s a pity because in my opinion they work better when they sing in Spanish, the result is that the pieces are not bad but they absolutely fail to stick in my head, every time I listen to them after a while I have already forgotten them .
Very basic inside of the disc, black and white leaflet with 80s-style lyrics, I have two different covers instead, I don’t know if it’s a mistake, a gift or if the disc is just like that.
Anyway let’s say 8 for Chisel, 7 (less) for Mess, so 7.5 on average!

Italy, on the other hand, answers to the call with a very 80s Italian split with two of the most interesting new bands in Italy.
Iena start, they come from Florence and are not so new really, because they have been around for about five years. Theirs is an oi influenced by a certain non-obvious 80s hardcore (like Stigmathe or Bed Boys), with martial drumming and powerful choirs.
The chosen cover is interesting, a decidedly little-known piece from the first single of Litfiba (an italian new wave band from the 80s that later became very successful here as a rock band), I adore the first Litfiba but I have reservations about the choice of the piece as perhaps too obscure, I would have been curious to see them tested with something else. However, the cover is undoubtedly successful, with a nice bass line.
Scalpo instead come from Sondrio, they have a 7″ released two years ago but they only started playing live a few months ago. More than the 80s I would say they are vintage, from the deliberately lo-fi recording to the cover of the Rough, to talk about something more recent, they remind me of Tetro Pugnale, but their new song, “L’uomo di ferro”, doesn’t impress me much, I think that their previous songs were better.
In short, I repeat, they are two interesting bands because it is intriguing to listen to the vision of oi “built in Italy” by two bands that start from the hardcore area (in Italy the first oi and hardcore bands had much more things in common than in other countries); in some moments, however, the nostalgia effect is a bit too marked and something more would be needed to really stand out (and one original piece per band is perhaps a bit too little..)
