Menace – Sempre Peggio – Red Moon Heroes – Giambella Proud, Rozzano (MI) 13.01.2023

E’ qualche anno (2019?) che i Menace mancavano dall’Italia, per cui finalmente arriva un’ottima occasione per rivederli dal vivo; nel mentre un nuovo cambio di formazione (l’uscita dal gruppo di Finn e poi la sua tragica scomparsa hanno contribuito) ha portato Noel (unico membro originale) da dietro la batteria alla voce e chitarra (anche se stasera, per disguidi tecnici, canterà e basta… la cosa deve però essergli piaciuta visto che vedrò dalle foto che, nella data successiva a Roma, sarà di nuovo senza chitarra).
Il posto per l’occasione è il Giambella Proud che, a dispetto del nome, si trova non in Giambellino ma a Rozzano, nei locali del vecchio circolo Svolta (chiuso nel 2020). Il locale ha aperto da pochissimo e si vede che rispetto allo Svolta sono stati fatti molti lavori di aggiornamento, anzi ora il locale è forse anche troppo colorato…
Il concerto inizia presto con i Red Moon Heroes, causa assenza sotto il palco non posso recensirli, però sono riuscito con sotterfugi vari (in cambio dei tre quarti di Gentile e i sette ottavi di Collovati, più la metà di Mike Bongiorno) il video di una canzone del loro live, giudicate voi…
Seguono a ruota i milanesi Sempre Peggio, con line up anche in questo caso lievemente diversa dall’ultima volta in cui li avevo visti, con Giorgio (ex Ostile) alla seconda chitarra (che, a ripensarci, avevo già visto all’opera quando avevano suonato in apertura ai Bull Brigade in Santeria, però quella sera ero riuscito a vedere giusto un paio di pezzi).
A mio parere i Sempre Peggio dal vivo sfornano quasi sempre ottime prestazioni mentre su disco non mi hanno mai molto convinto, e li ho sempre visti molto apprezzati dai presenti. Stasera sono in buona forma e la gente li segue cantando e pogando il loro oi ad alta velocità ma sempre melodico (melodico almeno fino a quando gli regge la voce!). La seconda chitarra comunque è una scelta azzeccata, aggiunge potenza al suono e aiuta a “riempire” il palco. Un ottimo concerto, anche meglio di altre volte.
Ed ecco arrivare il turno dei Menace; come già avevo detto all’inizio la formazione si è modificata, Noel davanti sembra a suo agio con il ruolo di cantante e la band sembra rodata. Iniziano con un paio di pezzi nuovi, presi da Social Insecurity (il disco del 2018) inframmezzati da classiconi come la “Screwed Up” qui sotto.
Dopo qualche canzone il pubblico si sveglia, d’altro canto la seconda parte del concerto è riservata ai classiconi (escluso qualche pezzo del tutto nuovo come l’interessante “1212”). Arrivati a “GLC” non si fa attendere la classica invasione di palco con stage diving annessi, dopodichè gran chiusura con la bellissima “Last year’s youth”.
O meglio, finta chiusura, perchè a sorpresa parte una scatenata versione punky reggae di “Monkey man” con nuova invasione di palco e ospiti vari a cantare col gruppo, un finale davvero divertente.
A seguire c’è ancora tempo per il dj set affidato alla Psychobilly Italian Attack, dove i sopravvissuti al concerto ballano e cazzeggiano fino alla chiusura. Nonostante fosse venerdì 13, organizzazione assolutamente impeccabile da Mi-Decay e Psychobilly Italian Attack e ottima risposta del pubblico.
It’s been a few years (maybe 2019?) that Menace were missing from Italy, so finally there’s an excellent opportunity to see them again; meanwhile a new line-up change (because of Finn’s departure from the group and then his tragic death) has brought Noel (the only original member) from behind the drums to vocals and guitar (although tonight, due to technical problems, he’s just singing… he must have liked it since I will see from pics on the net that he will do the same the next day in Rome).
The place is the Giambella Proud which is in Rozzano, in the Milan’s suburbs, where some years ago there was the old Svolta club (closed in 2020). The new place has recently opened after many renovation works, indeed now the place is perhaps even too colourful…
The concert starts early with the Red Moon Heroes, due to their absence under the stage I cannot review them, but I managed with various subterfuges the video of a song from their live, listen and judge yourself…
They are closely followed by the Milanese Sempre Peggio, with a line up also in this case slightly different from the last time I had seen them, with Giorgio (ex Ostile) on second guitar (I had already seen him at work when they played as the opening act for Bull Brigade in Santeria, but I only managed to see a couple of songs that night).
In my opinion Sempre Peggio live almost always do excellent performances while on record they have never convinced me so much, anyway I have always seen them highly appreciated by those present. They’re in good shape tonight and people follow along singing and pogoing their uptempo but always melodic oi (melodic at least as long as his voice can keep up!). The second guitar however is a good choice, it adds power to the sound and helps to “fill” the stage. A very good concert, even better than other times.
And here comes the Menace; as I already said at the beginning, the line-up has changed, Noel in front seems comfortable with the role of singer and the band seems to be in good shape. They start with a couple of new songs, taken from Social Insecurity (the 2018 record) interspersed with classics like “Screwed Up”.
After a few songs the audience wakes up, also because the second part of the concert is reserved for their classics (excluding some completely new songs such as the interesting “1212”). When “GLC” arrives, also arrives the classic stage invasion with stage diving, after which the ending with the beautiful “Last year’s youth”.
But it was a fake closure, because surprisingly a wild punky reggae version of “Monkey man” starts, with a new stage invasion and various guests singing with the group, a really fun ending.
Afterwards there is still time for the DJ set entrusted to Psychobilly Italian Attack, where the survivors of the concert dance and mess around until closing. Despite it being Friday the 13th, absolutely flawless organization from the guys of Mi-Decay and Psychobilly Italian Attack, and excellent response by the people.
