Alle prese con le nuove uscite di due pesi massimi dello ska in Italia

Arpioni “Les jeux sont faits” Autoprodotto LP 2022
17 anni. E’ questo il tempo che separa questo nuovo “Les jeux sont faits” dal precedente “Malacabeza”. Un disco che all’epoca sembrava avrebbe aperto agli Arpioni le porte del successo, visto l’enorme successo di “Malacabeza” (con il sodale Tonino Carotone), della cover di “Una storia disonesta” e di tante altre gemme contenute in quell’album.
E invece gli Arpioni sono rimasti rudi e nascosti all’occhio del grande pubblico. Forse perchè sono un po’ come la loro città, Bergamo, meravigliosa ma sempre un po’ fuori dai giri turistici tradizionali. Nel 2008 si prendono una pausa, per poi ritornare nel 2016 a macinare chilometri qua e là per lo stivale e, ogni tanto, all’estero.
“Les jeux sont faits” è un classico disco degli Arpioni dall’inizio alla fine, tanto che non si direbbe che possano essere passati poi così tanti anni. La ricetta arpionesca è sempre la stessa: influenze latine, stornelli folk e quel particolare gusto per la melodia vicina al cantautorato italiano che si innestano come un buon albero da frutto su una base ska tradizionale.
Il trittico iniziale “Les jeux son fait”, “E si vincerà” (con Picchio della Banda Bassotti alla seconda voce) e “Non vorrei fare la guerra” (con l’intro di Dr. Ring Ding) è pura bomba atomica, tre pezzi classicamente Arpioni eppure freschi anche oggi. Divertente e apprezzabilissimo il latin ska “Bailando ska cha cha”, altro pezzo al 110% Arpioni.
Il disco poi cala un attimo, ma riserva ancora notevoli chicche come la buscaglioniana “Nancy”, la toccante “Non basterai tu” e “Vai via” (con la sezione fiati che cita apertamente “La pelle nera”), e il disco termina in territori 60s con “Ciao mondo” e una bellissima e molto soul voce femminile ospite (Khrista Light, a me sconosciuta).
Non è il migliore disco degli Arpioni, ma è un ottimo disco di ska italiano, suonato ottimamente, con testi ben equilibrati e che non ha il minimo segno di ruggine. La ricetta Arpioni funziona oggi come anni fa: lunga vita agli Arpioni!

E qui mi tocca cospargermi il capo di cenere. Quando qualche tempo fa, sulla pagina Instagram di Oi! Senza Pietà, ho stilato la classifica dei migliori dischi del 2022, questo “Chicken blues” non l’ho inserito. Lo avevo ascoltato distrattamente, poi in quel periodo avevo da fare, una tremenda inondazione, le cavallette…
No, in realtà devo accettare semplicemente il fatto che mi sono rincoglionito. Prima o poi doveva succedere.
Ma chissenefrega delle classifiche, questo è il momento per fare almeno parziale ammenda, dicendo che questo è un discone come non se ne vedono tanti. E’ un po’ che sostengo che, per quanto riguarda lo ska original (l’unico che conta, il resto sono solo pallide imitazioni) (sì lo so che è una provocazione ad effetto, infiammiamo un po’ il dibattito NDR), in Italia ci sono Shots in the dark e One Droppers, e tutto il resto è dietro (sicuramente mi sono dimenticato qualcuno e rimpiangerò questa frase, come per la classifica di Instagram, ma ho premesso che sono rincoglionito, quindi tutto a posto).
E con questo disco i romani Shots in the dark mettono una seria ipoteca sullo scettro (non per niente esce per la spagnola Liquidator Music, garanzia di qualità per ska e reggae); un disco filologicamente perfetto, registrato benissimo e caldo, anzi bollente nelle atmosfere. Ma non si tratta solo di aderenza ad un canone, o di eccelse abilità tecniche (ci sono anche quelle): è un disco sia ballabile e canticchiabile a più non posso, sia perfetto da tenere in soottofondo a casa. Specificarlo può sembrare ridondante, ma in realtà io ho a casa dei dischi tecnicamente bellissimi ma sostanzialmente noiosi, e questo non è il caso, è un disco che ha anima.
Basta parole. Compratevelo.
Il pezzo migliore: “Shame” (ha lottato con “Chicken blues”, ma alla fine ha quel non so cosa in più)
Il pezzo meno riuscito: “Do your light” (un dignitosissimo lento che richiama gli Slackers e che scelgo come meno riuscito abbastanza a caso solo perchè non c’è un pezzo davvero sottotono)

17 years. This is the time that separates this new “Les jeux sont faits” from the previous “Malacabeza”. A record that at the time seemed to have opened the doors to success for the Arpioni, because of the enormous success of “Malacabeza” (which featured his partner Tonino Carotone), the cover of “Una storia disonesta” and many other gems contained in that album.
But Arpioni remained rude and hidden from the eye of the general public. Maybe because they’re like their city, Bergamo, wonderful but always a little off the traditional tourist circuits (do you come in Italy for holidays? take a trip in Bergamo Alta, that’s my tip, NDA). In 2008 they called it a day, and then returned in 2016 to grind kilometers here and there in Italy and sometimes abroad.
“Les jeux sont faits” is a classic Arpioni record from start to finish, so much so that you wouldn’t think that so many years have gone by. The Arpioni’s recipe is always the same: Latin influences, folk “stornelli” (Roman kind of folk, NDA) and a particular taste for melody close to Italian songwriting that are grafted like a good fruit tree on a traditional ska base.
The starting trio “Les jeux son fait”, “E si vincerà” featuring Picchio from Banda Bassotti on the backing vocals) and “I would not make war” (intro by Dr. Ring Ding) is pure atomic bomb, three classically Arpioni pieces yet still fresh today. The Latin ska “Bailando ska cha cha”, it’s another 110% Arpioni song, amusing and highly appreciated.
The disc then drops a little, but still reserves notable gems such as the buscaglionesque “Nancy” (Fred Buscaglione was an italian swing singer, NDA), the touching “Non basterai tu” and “Vai via” (with the horn section that openly mentions the old soul song “La pelle nera”), and the disc ends in 60s territories with “Hello world” and a beautiful and very soulful female guest voice (Khrista Light, unknown to me).
It’s not the best Arpioni record, but it’s an excellent Italian ska record, played excellently, with well-balanced lyrics and which doesn’t show the slightest sign of rust. The Arpioni recipe works today as it did years ago: long live the Arpioni!

And here I have to sprinkle my head with ashes. When some time ago, on the Instagram page of Oi! Senza Pietà, I ranked the best records of 2022, I didn’t include this Chicken Blues. I had listened to him distractedly, then at that time I was busy, a terrible flood, locusts…
No, actually I just have to accept the fact that I became dumb. Sooner or later it had to happen.
But who cares about rankings, this is the moment to make at least partial amends, saying that this is a fuckin’ good record like no one can see elsewhere. I usually say that, as regards original ska (the only one that counts, the rest are just pale imitations) (yes I know it’s a provocation, let’s inflame the debate a bit NDR), in Italy there are Shots in the dark and One Droppers, and everything else is behind (I’m sure I forgot someone and I’ll regret this sentence, as for the Instagram ranking, but I already said I’m dumb, so everything’s fine).
And with this record the Romans Shots in the dark put a serious mortgage on the scepter (it is no coincidence that it is released by the Spanish Liquidator Music, a guarantee of quality for ska and reggae); a philologically perfect record, very well recorded and with a warm, indeed boiling, atmosphere. But it’s not just about adherence to a canon, or sublime technical skills (there are those too): it’s a record that can be danced and hummed as much as I can’t, and perfect to keep in the background at home. Specifying it may seem redundant, but in reality I have technically beautiful but substantially boring records at home, and this is not, it is a record that has soul.
