E’ tornato il tempo dei 7″… in pratica è tornato il tempo in cui ogni 5 minuti ti alzi a cambiare lato.
Facçao Opposta “Luta eterna” Contra Records, 7″ 2022
I Facçao Opposta vengono da quella bellissima città che è Lisbona, dove peraltro si mangia e si beve da Dio, e si sono formati addirittura nel lontano 2007.
Negli anni hanno fatto uscire un discreto numero di singoli (tra i quali un bello split con i nostri FAVL) e di dischi per una quantità insensata di etichette (no, davvero, la loro discografia è un vero casino).
Non si avevano loro notizie, però, dal 2018, quando avevano fatto uscire un disco (“Da luz a obscuridade” per i cechi di 4Subculture), che non era male, ma di cui ad essere sincero ricordo solo la cover dei Komintern Sect.
La scena puramente oi! portoghese non è mai stata molto grande nè molto antica; ricordo alcuni ottimi gruppi punk/ streetpunk anni 80 come Mata-Ratos o Crise Total, per il resto bisogna andare agli anni ’90, con gruppi come LusitanOi! (che però erano nazi) o Albert Fish (che invece non erano affatto di destra, e che fecero anche uno split con i Klasse Kriminale). Ultimamente la scena portoghese sembra invece essere in buona salute, con band come Grito!, Asas de Vingança o Falcata (dove credo militino alcuni membri dei Facçao Opposta) e addirittura due compilation su LP dall’eloquente titolo “Portugal Oi!” uscite nel 2021 e nel 2022.
I Facçao Opposta ci lasciano questo bell’EP di tre pezzi, in cui il lato A è un assalto sonoro non indifferente, con la brutale “Mentira ou verdade” che apre le danze, aggressiva nel testo e nella musica (apprezzo il fatto che abbiano tradotto i testi in inglese nel libretto del 7″), mentre “Despedida”, probabilmente il pezzo migliore del disco, è un po’ più melodica, con però sempre il marchio di fabbrica di una voce roca ed efficace. Il lato B ci offre un’altrettanto buona “Depressao”.
Un disco veramente bello, la cui unica pecca è la poca durata (capisco che è un 7″, ma magari un’altra canzone nel lato B ci stava). Gran bel ritorno sulle scene comunque! 8 su 10, crepi l’avarizia!
West Side Boys “Fluctuat nec mergitur” Bords de Seine 7″ 2022
Uno dei miei vari dispiaceri è sicuramente non aver mai visto gli West Side Boys dal vivo, a mio parere un gruppo non abbastanza conosciuto e apprezzato, in particolare all’estero.
Formati nel 1990, si sciolsero pochi anni dopo, nel 1993, dopo aver fatto uscire un discone come “Au fil du temps” mantenendo un’aura semileggendaria, fino al loro ritorno nel 2008 con un ottimo disco come “Are back” (ecco, magari il titolo non era proprio leggendario).
L’ultimo loro disco risaliva al 2017, un 7″ (di tiratura limitatissima) con due pezzi di cui uno era una cover dei Tolbiac’s Toads e l’altro era già uscito in un loro album, quindi direi che l’uscita di un loro nuovo lavoro è un piccolo evento di cui essere contenti. E facciamoci bastare anche il fatto che siano (al solito) solo due pezzi, perchè almeno sono inediti (registrati nel 2021)!
Si tratta di 2 ottimi pezzi oi! che sembrano usciti dritti dagli anni ’90, melodici e potenti, non saprei dire quale dei due mi piace di più perchè davvero sono entrambi notevoli. Gli West Side Boys suonano con rabbia e urgenza, come se gli anni non fossero passati. Niente mode, niente fighetterie, qui come si diceva una volta è “no mess no fuss just pure impact”!
Ottima grafica (come quasi tutti i prodotti Bords de Seine), registrazione molto valida, purtroppo sono solo due pezzi quindi mi fermo al 7/10 sperando di poter sentire a breve qualcos’altro dei West Side Boys.

Facçao Opposta come from the beautiful city of Lisbon, where, moreover, you eat and drink like God, and they were even formed way back in 2007.
Over the years they have released a huge amount of singles (including a nice split with our FAVL) and records for a senseless amount of labels (really, their discography is a real mess).
However, we hadn’t heard from them since 2018, when they released an album (“Da luz a obscuridade” for the Czechs of 4Subculture), which wasn’t bad, but to be honest, I can only remember the Komintern Sect cover.
The oi! Portuguese scene was never very large or very old; I remember some excellent 80s punk/streetpunk bands like Mata-Ratos or Crise Total, for the rest you have to go to the 90s, with bands like LusitanOi! (who, unfortunately, were nazis) or Albert Fish (who, on the other hand, were not right-wing at all, and also did a split EP with Klasse Kriminale). Lately the Portuguese scene seems to be in good health, with good bands like Grito!, Asas de Vingança or Falcata (where I believe some members of Facçao Opposta militate) and even two LP compilations with the eloquent title “Portugal Oi!” released in 2021 and 2022.
Facçao Opposta leave us this beautiful three-piece EP, in which side A is a not indifferent sonic assault, with the brutal “Mentira ou verdade” that opens the disc, aggressive both in text and music (I appreciate the fact that they have translated the lyrics into English in the booklet), while “Despedida”, probably the best track, is a little more melodic, but always with the trademark of a hoarse and effective voice. The B-side offers us an equally good “Depressao”.
A truly beautiful record, whose only flaw is the short duration (I understand that it’s a 7″, but maybe another song on the B side would fit in). Great return to the scene anyway! 8 out of 10!
West Side Boys “Fluctuat nec mergitur” Bords de Seine 7″ 2022
One of my regrets is certainly never having seen live West Side Boys, a band, in my opinion, not known and appreciated enough, especially abroad.
Born in 1990, they disbanded a few years later, in 1993, after a fantastic record as “Au fil du temps” maintaining a semi-legendary aura, until their return in 2008 with an excellent album like “Are back” (ok, maybe the title wasn’t so legendary).
Their last album dated back to 2017, a 7″ (very limited edition) with two songs, one was a Tolbiac’s Toads cover and the other had already been released in one of their albums, so I would say that the release of one of their new work is quite an event and we have to be happy about. And let’s make it enough that there are (as usual) only two tracks, because at least they are unreleased (recorded in 2021)!
These are 2 great oi! songs that seem to come straight out of the 90s, melodic and powerful, I can’t tell which of the two I like most because they are both truly remarkable. West Side Boys play with anger and urgency, as if the years hadn’t passed. No fads, no poshy stuff, as someone once said it’s “no mess no fuss just pure impact”!
Great graphics (like almost all Bords de Seine products), very good recording, sadly it’s only 2 songs so I’ll stop at 7/10 hoping to hear more from West Side Boys soon.
