Cran “Natë” UVPR, LP 2023

I Cran (voce femminile, una chitarra, basso e batteria) si definiscono “oi froid”, con riferimento alla cold wave (ne abbiamo già parlato tipo qui o anche qui). Vi evito la solita lista di riferimenti musicali, diciamo che siamo sulla stessa linea dei Rancoeur. Rispetto all’EP precedente (nel caso la abbiate ascoltato) il ritmo è un pochino più rallentato e le chitarre sono un po’ più “eteree”.

Il disco inizia un po’ in sordina con un trio di canzoni non troppo riuscite, che mi sanno un po’ di già sentito. La situazione migliora con “Ad vitam”, ultimo pezzo del lato A, e con il primo del lato B, “La meute”, decisamente più graffiante e “cattivo”. In generale il lato B è decisamente migliore, con un altro pezzo notevole come “L’amour”.

Il disco è ben suonato, ben registrato, il genere che fanno mi piace, hanno la voce femminile che per me di solito è un plus… eppure non scatta la scintilla. E’ un bel disco, capiamoci (e devo dire che dopo qualche ascolto migliora, all’inizio mi aveva lasciato più freddo), ma a me sembra come se mancasse qualcosa che li aiuti a distinguerli dagli (ormai numerosi) altri gruppi che hanno il loro stesso stile. Anche i testi sono belli, ma non particolarmente memorabili (non quanto quelli, ad esempio, dei Litovsk). Ultima cosa: alcune canzoni sono un po’ troppo lunghe, forse inciderle con qualche decina di secondi in meno avrebbe giovato.

Il pezzo migliore: “La meute”. Forse la canzone più punk del disco, con un bel lavoro di chitarre in sottofondo e un ottimo ritornello

Il pezzo meno riuscito: “Paumè”. Nonostante un bel coro, la canzone sembra un po’ anonima e scivola via senza riuscire ad incidere

The Daltonz “Hier, demain, maintenant” UVPR, LP, 2023

Per i Daltonz non sembra però passato tutto questo tempo: il loro è un rock n roll stradaiolo e proletario che se ne sbatte altamente delle mode e fila dritto per la sua strada. In pratica fanno quello che dovrebbe fare un gruppo oi! e lo fanno con una bella dose di strafottenza… e se avete imparato a conoscermi dalle mie recensioni dovreste aver capito che gli sto facendo dei complimenti!

Non ho mai visto i Daltonz dal vivo ma in questo disco sento una bella dose di attitudine vecchia scuola; non vinceranno nessun premio originalità e non c’è molto spazio per virtuosismi ma non sento il bisogno di nessuna delle due cose. Paradossalmente l’originalità sta nel fatto di fare un classico disco di oi con influenze punk 77 e pub rock proprio mentre moltissimi altri gruppi in Francia si sono spostati sul filone cold oi… è il caso di dire che si è ribaltato il mondo! Classici testi stradaioli e grafica adattissima al contesto. A mio parere un ottimo disco, classico senza risultare noioso, potente e grezzo senza risultare eccessivo. E dura solo 25 minuti, impossibile annoiarsi (anzi, io avrei aggiunto una canzone)!

Il pezzo migliore: “Double tamponné”, canzone ottima con un ritornello killer… molto bello anche “Rive droit”, le cui chitarre mi ricordano qualcosa ma non riesco a capire cosa…

Il pezzo meno riuscito: “Jusqu’a la font du permafrost” è un po’ lungo e non troppo ispirato

Cran “Natë” UVPR, LP 2023

After a 7” EP and after joining the “Paris on oi!” compilation, the Parisians Cran (not to be confused with À Cran, another band also from Paris and always punk-oi… it seems like a joke, I know!) debut with an LP with a title that I have to copy paste because I don’t know how to type the ë. The band was born in 2018, the songs on this record were recorded at the end of 2021 but (I don’t know why) they’re releasing them now (the record came out at the end of February).
Cran (female vocals, one guitar, bass and drums) call themselves “oi froid”, with reference to the cold wave (we’ve already talked about it here or here too). I’ll avoid the usual list of musical references, I’m just saying they’re on the same vein of Rancoeur. Compared to the previous EP (if you’ve listened to it) the rhythm is a little slower and the guitars are a little more “ethereal”.
The album begins a little quietly with a trio of songs that are not too successful, like I’ve heard them before. The situation improves with “Ad vitam”, the last piece of side A, and with the first of side B, “La meute”, decidedly more scathing and “nasty”. In general side B is decidedly better, with another notable piece like “L’amour”.
The disc is well played, well recorded, I like the genre they make, they have a female voice which is usually a plus for me… yet the spark doesn’t strike. It’s a good record, let’s say (and I must say that after a few listens it improves, at the beginning it left me colder), but to me it seems as if something was missing that helps them to distinguish them from the (by now numerous) other bands that have the their own style. The lyrics are also nice, but not particularly memorable (as in the case of, for example, Litovsk). Last thing: some songs are a little too long, perhaps recording them with a few tens of seconds less would have helped.

Best song: “La meute”. Perhaps the punkest song on the album, with a nice guitar work in the background and an excellent chorus

Less successful song: “Paumè” Despite a nice chorus, the song feels a bit anonymous and slips away without being able to affect

Always France, always UVPR (always quality label), but this time we move to Caen, in Normandy for this new album by the punk-oi band Daltonz (not to be confused with the almost homonymous Romans), 12 years after the previous one (much appreciated by me at the time) “Suedehead rock”.
For the Daltonz, however, it doesn’t seem that all this time has passed: theirs is a street rock n roll that doesn’t give a damn about fashions and goes straight on its way. They basically do what an oi! band should do and they do it with a good dose of arrogance… and if you’ve come to know me from my reviews you should have understood that I’m complimenting them!
I’ve never seen the Daltonz live but I feel a good dose of old school attitude on this record; they won’t win any originality awards and there’s not much room for virtuosity but I don’t feel the need for either. Paradoxically, the originality lies in the fact of making a classic oi record with 77 punk and pub rock influences just as many other bands in France have moved to the cold oi trend… it is appropriate to say that the world has turned upside down! Classic street texts and graphics that are very suitable for the context. In my opinion a very good record, classic without being boring, powerful and raw without being excessive.

Best song: “Double tamponné”, excellent song with a killer refrain… very nice also “Rive droit”, whose guitars remind me of something but I can’t figure out what…

Less successful song: “Jusqu’a la font du permafrost” is a bit too long and not so inspired
